Caveats

Below is a listing of caveats for the inpatient data.

The Togus VA Hospital is not required to submit data to the Maine Health Data Organization.

The Acadia Hospital and Spring Harbor Hospital are psychiatric care hospitals. Spring Harbor Hospital was formerly known as Jackson Brook Institute until February of 1999, when it was purchased by Maine Medical Center. All Jackson Brook Institute data for prior years are now located using the Spring Harbor Hospital name.

Data from the Augusta Mental Health Institute (now Riverview Psychiatric Center) and the Bangor Mental Health Institute (now Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center) are available for 1999.  However, due to the unique nature of the data, it has not been included in the statewide inpatient database and is not found on this web site.  The Augusta Mental Health Institute (now Riverview Psychiatric Center) and the Bangor Mental Health Institute (now Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center) data may be obtained by contacting the Maine Health Data Organization directly.

The New England Rehabilitation Hospital is the only acute care rehabilitation hospital in Maine. The overwhelming majority of patients at this hospital are transfers from Maine Medical Center (MMC) and Mercy Hospital in Portland. These patients are coded with the same diagnoses encountered while they were patients at MMC or Mercy. Any displays of this hospitals’ data should have an annotation denoting these special circumstances. When aggregating data, keep in mind that these patients are transfers from other hospitals and if mixed with patient tabulations from MMC and/or Mercy, inflated numbers will result unless the tabulations depict unduplicated patient counts.

Brighton Medical Center merged administratively with Maine Medical Center in August of 1996.

Mid-Coast Hospital-Bath is the former Bath Memorial Hospital and Mid-Coast Hospital-Brunswick  is the former Regional Memorial Hospital (Brunswick). These two hospitals merged administratively in 1994. Mid-Coast Hospital-Bath terminated inpatient care in June of 1997. All inpatient care has been provided at Mid-Coast Hospital-Brunswick.

Kennebec Valley Medical Center (AUGUSTA) and Mid Maine Medical Center (WATERVILLE) merged in 1997 and have been renamed Maine General Medical Center-Augusta and Maine General Medical Center-Waterville, respectively. Both sites continue to provide inpatient services and both sites continue to submit data separately to the Maine Health Data Organization.

Westbrook Hospital administratively merged with Mercy Hospital in August of 1999.

Inpatient Data from 2003 on will not have any charge dollar amounts.
